What Is a Time Signature?

A time signature tells musicians how beats are grouped inside each measure.
Think of a measure as a musical container.

The top number tells how many beats belong in each measure. The bottom number tells which note receives one beat. In all three examples below, the bottom number is 4, so a quarter note receives one beat.
